With the decline of CD sales, artists heavily rely on streaming payments, resulting in significantly reduced royalties. Labels sign fewer artists for less money, and the days of lavish spending on artist development are gone.

This cost-effective model is designed for budget-conscious and blue-collar artists, allowing them to pay only for the services they need.
An additional standout feature of SMG's approach is the absence of contracts or terms. Artists pay fees monthly or per song, with no ownership of their rights given to SMG. If an artist achieves success, there are no percentages, points, or back-end payments owed to SMG.

Playlisting services provided by SMG was born out of a pressing need to improve the services available to our own artists. We faced significant challenges in the music industry, particularly with the pervasive use of bots. This issue led to several of our artists being removed from distribution platforms like Tunecore and OneRPM due to bot-related violations, even after engaging so-called "Playlist promotion" companies. Despite significant financial investments in these services that claimed to provide "organic" and "bot-free" playlisting, we predominantly ended up with bot-generated streams.
In response, we decided to invest heavily in acquiring our own playlist databases, amassing over 4000 playlists. However, our experience taught us valuable lessons through trial and error, revealing that many of these playlists did not meet their claimed standards. They often contained a mishmash of genres, such as rock bands alongside boy bands and country artists. These playlists not only lacked quality but also charged us additional fees, consuming both time and money. Additionally, many of these playlists had not been updated since 2017.
In light of these discoveries, we diligently vetted each playlist to protect our investment. This rigorous process ultimately yielded around 200 high-quality playlists, specifically tailored to the alternative & rock formats. We realized the importance of discernment in playlist curation.
Building on our newfound expertise, we extended this approach to benefit other artists, particularly emerging acts. In addition to the amazing success of our platinum and multi-platinum artists, the results for our "baby bands" on Spotify, such as PSYCHO HILL, and ONE DAY ALIVE, who had limited touring opportunities and airplay, were more impressive. Their impressive streaming numbers were primarily achieved through two proven methods: legitimate playlisting using our curated contacts and targeted Spotify advertising.
In summary, our journey has been marked by trial and error, significant financial investments, and reliance on services that did not align with our goal of establishing authentic fan bases for our artists. Now, we prioritize careful vetting and authenticity in our playlist curation process.
